Myke Hurley and Jason Snell in the lobby of the Steve Jobs Theater

Designed in California

If you’ve been reading Mac and Apple writing for any length of time, you already know Jason Snell. Former editor-in-chief of Macworld, runs Six Colors, co-hosts Upgrade with Myke Hurley, contributor to most of the podcasts you’ve ever listened to about Apple. He has been covering this company professionally for roughly two-thirds of its existence, which is the kind of fact that catches you off guard until you do the math.

He and Myke want to make a proper history podcast, Designed in California. Narrative episodes covering Apple’s full fifty-year run, written by Snell, drawing from a stack of long-out-of-print Apple books, period magazines, oral histories, and his own files from the 1990s onward. The fiftieth anniversary of the company seems like a fine reason to actually do this before more of the source material rots away.

The campaign blew past its $40,000 goal in record time and is already over $107K, which means the first stretch goal (50 episodes in year one) is locked in, and so is a monthly bonus Q&A episode just for backers. It’s clearly going to happen. The only question is how big it gets and how many extra episodes get unlocked along the way.

Back Designed in California on Kickstarter. The campaign runs through July 1.
